Preposition is a word that is one of the most important parts of a sentence. This describes the position, time, way, place etc. of anything, such as the time when anything happens, the way in which anything is done etc.The function of preposition is not only to show the activity described above but it also link noun, pronoun, phrases etc. to other words in a sentence.
Pre + Position = Preposition
The word preposition has two syllable 'Pre' and 'Position'. 'Pre' means 'before' and 'Position' means 'place'.
Therefore, preposition is a word that comes before a noun or pronoun and link the noun or pronoun with the other words of the sentences.
Definition : Preposition is a word used before a noun or pronoun to show the relations with the other words of the sentence.
Examples : on, in, under, between, behind, of ... etc.
The lamp is on the table.
The girl is reading in the room.
The cat is playing under the table.
Five comes between four and six.
He hid behind the tree.
In the first sentence give above 'on' is the prepositions which shows the position of the lamp and also relation between lamp and table.
In the same way girl is with room, cat with table, five with four and six, he with the tree.
Note : There are about 150 prepositions in all
TYPES OF PREPOSITION
There are mainly six types of prepositions as following :
Simple preposition : The preposition which consists one word only is called simple preposition.
Examples : on, at, in, out, of, to, up, down, over, under etc.
Double preposition : The preposition which consists two words only is called double preposition.
Examples : within, into, upto, inside etc.
Compound preposition : The preposition which consists more than two words is called compound preposition.
Examples : on behalf of, according to, in front of etc.
Participle preposition : The preposition which is ending with 'ing' is called participle preposition.
Examples : reading, bringing, going, coming etc.
Disguised preposition : The prepositions that are not used in the sentences but are implied, is called Disguised preposition.
Examples : 5 O'clock
Letters 'a' and 'o' are the examples of Disguised preposition.
'a' stands for shortened form of preposition 'on' and 'o' stands for shortened form of preposition.
Phrase preposition : A group of words used with the force of a single preposition is called phrase preposition.
Examples : by means of, by dint of, with a view to, in spite of, in lue of, instead of, in order to etc.
