'AT' AND 'ON'

Hello friends in this post you will learn about the preposition 'At and On'. If you don't know about the preposition then you can read my previous post named as 'Use of prepositions' by clicking (Here). 

At is a preposition that is used in a sentence for various purposes as small places, aim, time, rate, speed, temporary action, age, stage etc.

On also is a preposition that is used in a sentence for various purposes as touch with surface, certainty, direction, about or related to,  in phrases etc.

Use of 'At'

1.  At is used before the name of small places.

Examples :
  • Her brother lives at Jajuar.
  • He lives at Bharatpur.
  • My friend lives at Karolbag.

2.  At is used after the following words to express the sense of aim.

 shout at
 look at
 grumble at
 kick at
 shoot at
 aim at
 laugh at
 smile at
 mock at
 growl at
 bite at


3.  At is used to express the sense of time.

Examples : 
  • I will come at 5 a.m.
  • They reached at 6 O' clock.

4.  At is used before the following words :

 At the airport
 At the theatre
 At the bus stop
 At page 20
 At the bottom
 At a conference
 At home
 At school
 At college
 At university
 At the bridge
 At the station
 At the platform
 At a party
 At a match
 At a lecture
 At a concert
 At the top


5. At is used before the time expressing words :

 At night
 At midnight
 At noon
 At dawn
 At daybreak
 At afternoon
 At dusk
 At twilight


6. At is used before the following words:

 At this moment
 At this juncture
 At easter
 At bed time
 At this hour
 At Christmas


7. At is used before the words that express price, rate or speed :

Examples :
He sells rice at Rs. 22/- a kilo.
She got that pen at Rs. 50.
The car was running at 80 kilometres an hour.


8. At is used to express the temporary action.

Examples :
  • I was at work that time.
(I was working that time)
  • He is at play.
(He is playing now)


9. At is used before the words that express age and stage.
Examples :
He died at the age of sixty.
She left Agra at thirty.

1. On is used to express the sense of touch with surface.
Examples :
  • There are two pens on the table.
  • His servant was carrying two bags on his head.
  • The patient is sitting on the wheel chair.

2. On is used before the time expressing words to express the sense of certainty.

 On Monday
 On Monday evening
 On the same night
 On Tuesday 
 On the morning of the event
 On the evening of the 1st January 


3. On is used before A /An / the + bus / train / aeroplane / ship.

Examples :
  • He was on a bus.
  • She was on a train.
  • I was on a plane.
  • You are on a ship.

4. On is used before A / An + cycle / scooter / motorcycle etc.

Examples :
  • He was on a cycle.
  • She was on a scooter.
  • You were on a motorcycle.

5. On is used before Possessive Adjectives + cycle / scooter / motorcycle.

Examples :
  • He goes to school on his cycle.
  • They go to market on their scooter.
  • You always go to office on your motorcycle.

6. On is used before foot, a horse, horse's back, a camel, a camel's back, an elephant, elephant's back, a buffalo, buffalo's back.

Examples :
  • She walks on foot.
  • I was riding on a horse.

7. On is used to express the sense of direction.

Examples :
  • The robber drew a dagger on him.

8. On is used before the following words :

 On television
 On a cold day
 On the radio
 On the phone
 On the telephone
 On strike
 On leave
 On fire
 On a diet
 On holiday
 On business
 On a tour
 On a trip
 On the wall
 On a journey
 On the committee
 On demand
 On 15th March
 On duty
 On loan
 On page 50
 On guard
 On the whole 


9. On is used in a sentence to express the sense of about or related to.

Examples :
That was a book on English Grammar.
This book is on A.P.J Abdul Kalam Azad.


10. On is used to express the feeling of being an 'official member'.

Examples :
She is on the staff of the U.P.S.C.
He is on the committee.


11. On is also used in some phrases as the following :

 On the first floor
 On the ground floor
 On the back of paper
 On the second floor
 On the front of a letter
 On the right 
 On the left
 On a list
 On a farm
