USE OF WOULD

In this post I shall give you complete information about would.Would is an auxiliary verb. To read read about auxiliary verb click (here).Not, let's proceed to would, would is past participle form of 'will'. This is used in a sentence as 'helping verb' or 'auxiliary verb'. To know further about it let's read below.
What is Would ?
would is a modal auxiliary verb which is used in place of will in past tense. It is used as a helping verb or auxiliary verb in a sentence.
Example :
- Present Tense : He will come to me.
- Past Tense : He would come to me.
USES OF 'WOULD' IN DIFFERENT MEANING
Past Tense Form of Will
Would is used to to express Past Tense Form in Indirect speech.
Examples :
- He said, "He will come to me."
- He said that he would come to me.
- The teacher said, "He will succeed in his life."
- The teacher said that he would succeed in his life.
Past Habit
Would is used to express the past habit
Examples :
- He would argue with me on the matter of lost books.
- She would read the book for hours in her room.
- The farmer would work hard every day.
- Sheela would go for a walk every morning.
Polite Request
Would is used to express Polite request in Interrogative sentence.
Examples :
Would Like to
- Would you like to have meal ?
- Would you like to play with me ?
Would you
- Would you please come to my house?
- Would you please listen to me?
- Would you lend me your pen ?
Probability
Would is used to express the sense of Probability.
Examples :
- He would be his friend.
- They would be farmers.
- She would be an officer.
- That would be a prisoner.
Wish
Would is used to expess the sense of Wish in a sentence.
Examples :
- Would that She were there.
Mean : I wish that she were there.
- Would that I were a rich man.
Mean : I wish that I were a rich man..
Would Like To
- I would like to know what your goal is.
- Would you like to know who was he ?
Use of would |
Determination
Would is used to express the sense of Determination in a sentence.
Examples :
- She would have her own way.
Mean : She was determined to have her own way.
- He would never surrender himself before the judge.
- She would never tell a lie.
- They would never go against me.
Past Willingness
Would is used to express the meaning of 'Past Willingness' in a sentence.
Examples :
- They said that they would help me.
- He would do as you say.
- I would like to see them.
- They would like to go with me.
Preference or Choice
would is used to express the sense of 'Preference or Choice' in a sentence.
Examples :
- They would rather die than tell a lie.
- He would rather study than gossip with a friend.
- He would rather die than beg.
- She would as soon go as stay.
Note : When would is used in comparative sentence to express the sense of 'preference or choice' then after would 'rather' or 'sooner' can be used.
Unreal Conditions
Would is used to express the 'Unreal Conditions' of Present or Past Tense in the sentence of principal clause.
Examples :
- If I were Prime Minister I would eradicate unemployment form my country.
- I would go there, if I were allowed.
- If I have visited Delhi, I would have seen the India Gate.
- If I were your brother, I would beat you for this misdeed.
Note : In these types of sentence 'could' or 'might' is used in place of 'would' to express the possibility in principal clause.
Examples :
- If I had money, I could buy a bicycle.
- If you had knowledge of computer, you could be appointed for that post.
- If you had come here, you might have done it yourself.
- If It had not rain, the farmers might have harvested.
Refusal
would is also used to express 'refusal' in a sentence.
Examples :
- He wouldn't afford the expenditure.
Mean : He refused to afford the expenditure.
- He wouldn't go there.
