'OUGHT TO' AND 'MUST'

What is 'Ought To'

'Ought to' is a modal auxiliary verb which acts as helping verb in a sentence. It is normally used after the subject in a sentence to complete the sense but in Interrogative sentence is used before the subject. Only 'ought' is used before the subject and 'to' remains as it's own position. 

It does not happens the past form of 'ought to'. To use it in past sentence its structured must be  'Subject + ought to + have + main Verb3'. Ought to and should are the same auxiliary verb in the terms of usage and sense. You may use 'should' in place of 'ought to'

Examples :

Assertive       :  Students ought to/should work hard.
Interrogative  :  Why ought students to work hard ?
Assertive       :  I ought to/should win the cricket match.
Interrogative  :  Ought I to win the cricket match ?


USE OF 'OUGHT TO'

Moral Obligation, Desirability, Duty

Ought to is used to express the sense of 'moral obligation, desirability, duty' in a sentence.

Examples :
  • He ought to get better marks.
  • You ought to be ashamed of your this behaviour.
  • We ought to help who is in need.
  • One ought not to be rude.

Strong Possibility

Ought to is used to express the 'strong possibility' in a sentence.

Examples :
  • You ought to win the game.
  • He ought to pass the examination.
  • You ought to get success in your life.
  • This work ought to be completed in the time.

Advice

Ought to is used to express the sense of 'advice' in a sentence.

Examples :
  • They ought to read Ramayana.
  • You ought to get up early in the morning.
  • We ought not to go out in the night.
  • Students ought to go to school everyday.

Logical Necessity

Ought to is used to express the sense of 'logical necessity' in a sentence.

Examples :
  • You ought not to be late these days.
  • Ram ought to start teaching at once.
  • My friend ought not to go foreign these days.
  • You ought not to come late.

Past Obligation

Ought to is used to express the sense of 'past obligation' in a sentence. The structure of this sentence is 'Subject + ought to + have + main Verb3'.

Examples :
  • She ought to have worked hard.
  • You ought to have seen the Taj Mahal.
  • My friend ought to have obeyed his parents.
  • You ought to have helped the poor.


Disapproval of Past Obligation

Ought to is used to express the sense of 'disapproval of past obligation' in the sentence. It structure is  'Subject + ought not to + have + main Verb3'.

Examples :
  • They ought not to laugh at one's mistake.
  • My friend ought not to run as fast.
  • Teachers ought not to beat the students like that.
  • You ought not to treat the guest like that.

MUST

Compulsion or Strong Moral Obligation

Must is used to express the sense of 'compulsion or strong moral obligation' in a sentence.

Examples :
  • You must keep your promises.
  • Students must obey the orders of teachers.
  • You must respect your parents.
  • The patient must take medicine as directed by the doctor.


Fixed Determination

Must is used to express the sense of 'fixed determination' in a sentence.

Examples :
  • You must go there.
  • You must help him if needed.
  • He must surrender yourself to the police.
  • You must lend me Rs. 10,000.


Duty

Must is used to express the sense of 'duty' in a sentence.

Examples :
  • You must go to school everyday.
  • You must check it regularly.
  • Everyone must earn money for better life.
  • They must keep clean surrounding.


Certainty

Must is used to express the sense of 'certainty' in a sentence.

Examples :
  • You must finish the in time.
  • They must win the cricket match.
  • Your friend must be there before your reach.
  • The cinema must be started at 3 pm.


Strong Likelihood

Must is used to express the sens of 'strong likelihood' in a sentence.

Examples :
  • You must have heard about Mahatma Gandhi.
  • They must be hungry after a long time work.
  • He must be a doctor.
  • Every teachers must be well qualified.


Inevitable

Must is used to express the sense of 'inevitable' in a sentence.

Examples :
  • If you want to keep yourself fit, you must go for a walk in the morning.
  • Students must work hard to get first position in the class.
  • The police must be careful about theft and robbery.
  • If you fail in first attempt, you must try again.


Written Orders or Instructions

Must is used to express the sense of 'written orders or instructions' in the sentence.
Examples :
  • Employees must reach office at the time.
  • Clients must reach court before the judge.
  • Students must follow the orders of teachers.
  • Workers must be at their duty while time is not over.
Note : To express the 'high intensity' in a sentence 'must' is used in place of 'should'.
