USE OF 'SHOULD'

Indirect Speech

Should is used in place of  past form of 'shall' in indirect speech.

Ex
  • They said to me, "we shall not talk to you."           (Direct)
          They told me that they should not talk to me.            (Indirect)
  • My friend said to me, "Will you play with me?    (Direct)
          My friend asked me if I should play with him.     (Indirect)


Moral Obligation or Duty

Should is used to express the moral obligation or duty in a sentence.

Ex
  • He should love his parents.
  • You should not tell a lie.
  • You should obey the traffic rules while driving car.
  • Everyone should always speak the truth.
  • He should keep his promises.


Past Duty

Should along with have is used to express past duty.

Ex
  • I should have taken tea this time.
  • He should have come with her.
  • I should have completed my breakfast.
  • He should have gone to school.


To Give Advice

Should is used to express the sense of giving advice.

Ex
  • He should not laugh at her face.
  • You should not misguide anyone.
  • You should consult a doctor during illness.
  • He should abstain from bad habits.
  • You should work hard to succeed in life.


Supposition

Should is used in conditional clause to express supposition.

Ex
  • If she should try again, she will get success.
  • If you should come here, you will be taught.
  • If it should not rain, I shall go out.
  • If they should come here, I shall be pleased.
  • If he should help me, I also shall help him.


Possibility

Should is used to express the sense of possibility.

Ex
  • I think the college should open now.
  • They should finish the work.
  • My friend should reach home now.
  • If sky is clear, he should be able to go out.
  • I think the mall should be closed.


Less Possibility

Should is used to express the sense of less possibility in conditional clause.

Ex
  • If they should come, ask them to wait until I come.
  • If he should go to market, ask him to bring a shirt for me.
  • If you should stay at home, post this letter today.
  • If you should come to me, you will have to stay till 9 PM.
  • If Your brother should come my office, I shall provide a job.

Purpose and Result

Should is used to express purpose and result in a clause starting with So that / In order that.

Ex
  • We wrote that carefully so that none should find mistake.
  • He ran fast so that none should see him.
  • He helped in order that my life should be saved.
  • My elder brother taught me in order that my life should be settled.
  • My friend helped me in order that I should also help him.


Negative Purpose

Should is used to express negative purpose after lest.

Ex
  • He ran fast lest he should lose the contest.
  • Work hard lest you should lag in life.
  • Take medicine regularly lest you should fall ill again.
  • Complete your homework everyday lest the teacher should punish you.
  • I ran fast lest I should miss the bus.


Determination, Willingness, Threats, Orders or Promises

Should is used to express determination, willingness, threats, orders or promises after verbs or phrases in subordinate clause

Ex
  • I promised him that he should have a new bicycle.
  • I ordered him that he should go out.
  • My father threatened me that I should complete homework every day.
  • Is your father willing that you should go to market.
  • I determined that I should work hard to get success.


Formal Notices or Instructions

Should is used to express formal notices or instructions in a sentence.

Ex
  • You should answer all the questions.
  • You should complete all the home works.
  • You should always tell the truth.
  • Ravi should obey his elders.
  • Candidates should attempt all the questions.


Condition

Should is used to express condition.

Ex
  • Should we not give shelter, where will he live?
          If we should not give shelter, where will he live? 
  • Should he not come, where shall I go?
          If he should not come, where shall I go?
  • Should he not help me, who will help me?
         If he should help me, who will help me?


Rebuke

Should is used to give rebuke for polite advice or improvement in principle clause. This sentence should consist also unreal situation.

Ex
  • If they were you, they should never complete it.
  • If I were you, I should never beat him.
  • If he were you, he should not comply with me.
  • If you were me, you should not go there.
  • If I were him, I should never talk politely.
