USE OF SHALL AND WILL


Hello friends, you are welcomed to this post. In this post you will know about the use of ‘shall’ and ‘will’.  Shall and will is an auxiliary verb which is normally used for the event of future. I have already mentioned full conception about auxiliary verb in my another post named “What is auxiliary verb”. USE OF SHALL


As I have mentioned above that shall is an auxiliary verb which is used for the expression of various senses of future. It’s uses for various senses has been given below step by step.


work, Business or Incidents

1.     Shall is used to express any work, business or incidents of future time. It is used with the subjects of first person (I or We).

Ex
  • I shall go to New Delhi tomorrow.
  • I shall attend the meeting tomorrow.
  • We shall play the cricket next day.


Command, Promise, Threatened, Determination and Compulsion

Shall Is used to express command, promise, threatened, determination and compulsion with the subject of second person (You) and third person (He, She, it, they, singular noun and plural noun).

Ex

  A. Command
  • You shall not go outside today.
  • He shall not there to help you.

  B. Promise
  • He shall give you five thousand rupees today.
  • He shall have been given his book by 10 o’clock.

  C. Threatened
  • If you tease him, he shall beat you.

  D. Determination
  • He shall beat him.
  • You shall defeat him

  E. Compulsion
  • You shall have to reach school at 10 o’clock.
  • Employees shall be paid their fees by the end of every month.


Question Tag

3.     Shall is used in question tag of Imperative sentence starting with let us or let’s

Ex
  • Let us play game, shall we?
  • Let’s dance in the party, shall we?
  • Let us walk together, shall we?
  • Let’s sing a song together, shall we?


 Interrogative Sentence to Express the Suggestions

4.     Shall is used with the subjects of first person interrogative sentence to express the suggestions.

Ex
  • Shall we go to the cinema?
  • Shall I open the windows?

 In Interrogative Sentence to Expresses Simple Futurity, Permission or Desire

5.     Shall is used with the subjects of first person in Interrogative sentence that expresses simple futurity, permission or desire.

Ex

  A. Simple futurity
  • Shall I be wasting in despair?

  B. Permission
  • Shall I use your pen?
  • Shall we go with you?

  C. Desire
  • Shall I prepare tea for you?
  • Shall we wash your cloth?


 In Interrogative Sentence To Express Orders, Instructions And Speculations

6.     Shall is used with the subjects of first person in interrogative sentence which would express orders, instructions and speculations.

Ex

  A. Orders or Instructions
  • What shall I do for you?
  • What shall we bring for you from there?

  B. Speculations
  • What shall I do in a week?
  • Where shall we live this time next month?

USE OF 'WILL'


 Work, Business or Incidents of Future Time

1.     Will is used to express any work, business or incidents of future time with the subjects of third person (he, she, it, singular noun, plural noun, they) and second person (you).

Ex
  • You will go tomorrow.
  • He will beat him today.
  • They will come back in a month.
  • She will carry the bag.

Determination, Promise, Threatening and Willingness

2.     Will is used to express determination, promise, threatening and willingness with the subjects of first person (I or We).

Ex

  A. Determination

  • We will not let him go.
  • I will not permit him to go.
  
B. Promise
  • I will do everything for you.
  • We will bring bicycle for you, my son.
  
C. Threatening

  • I will beat you out today.
  • We will kill you.
  
D. Willingness

  • I will go to Agra to visit the Taj Mahal
  • We will go to Delhi with all my families.


To Get Information In Interrogative Sentence

3.     Will is used to get information in interrogative sentence. It is used with the subjects of second person (You) and third person (He, she, it, singular noun, they, or plural noun).

Ex

  • Will you sell your television?
  • Will he come to help me?


To Express The Sense Of Invitation, Request, Instructions, Orders And Inevitability

4.     Will is used to express the sense of invitation, request, instructions, orders and inevitability.

Ex

  A. Invitation

  • Will you come to my house?
  • Will he come to dinner?
  
B. Request

  • Will you help my brother?
  • Will you give me your pen?
  
C. Instructions/orders

  • Bring a glass of milk, will you?
  • He will come that day anyway.
  
D. Inevitability

  • He will fall.
  • The lazy will be poor.

Note :

 (i).  If any one of the words ‘be obliged, be grateful, be forced, be completed, be at a loss, be able and be unable ‘ is used in any sentence then shall is always used with the subjects of first persons ( I or We) not will.

Ex

  • We with all the members of family shall be obliged to you.     ()
  • We with all the members of family will be obliged to you    (×)
  • We shall be able to do it.  ()
  • We will be able to do it.    (×)

(ii).  To express the sense of refusal 'will not' or 'won’t' is used.

Ex

  • I will not permit you this time.
  • I won’t permit you this time.
  • The boy will not come within the time.
  • The boy won’t come within the time.
