Use of 'in' and 'into'

As all of us know that preposition is a word that is used before a noun or pronoun that related the noun or pronoun to other words of a sentence. In : Normally in is used in a sentence to show the static position of any things or objects inside any things, places, buildings, etc.

Into : Normally into is used in any sentence to show the movement of any thing or object from the outside to the inside of any things or objects.

Use of 'In'

1. 'In' is used before the name of any bigger place as country, town, continent, state, big town, etc.

Examples :

  • We live in India.
  • He lives in West Bengal.
  • India is in Asia continent.

2. 'In' is used also with some phrases like In the night, In the evening, In the morning, In the afternoon etc.

Examples :

  • He came he in the night
  • I will go to market in the evening.
  • I rise early in the morning.
  • My friend came to my home in the afternoon,

Note : Generally frequently we have to go through the words 'in the night' and at 'night'. There is a major difference between the words. In the night is used when there is a definite or certain night but at night is used when there is no any certain or definite night.

Examples : 

  • He came to me in the night of 25 January.
  • My friend generally comes at night.

In the first example 'in the night' is definite or certain night of 25 January only. But in the second example 'at night' is a night that would be of any time.

3. 'In' is used before the following words to make the sense of inside.

In the world, In the sky, In a letter, In a town, In prison, In a newspaper, In a street, In the room, In the bag, In church, In a queue, In a village, In hospital, In the train, In a city, In the house, In the bus etc.

Examples :

  • We live in the world.
  • They live in a village.
  • Fifty passengers were sitting in the bus.

4. 'In' is used to express the sense of permanent action in a sentence.

Examples :

  • My brother is in the Army.
  • He is in the education department.
  • I am in the Navy.
  • They are in the politics.

5. 'In' is used in a sentence to express the sense of period of time.

Examples :

  • Week : In a week, In this week, In this season 
  • Month : in January, in February, in March
  • Season : In this season, In spring, In autumn, In summer, In winter
  • Year : In 1999, In 2002, In the year of 1943, In 2006
  • Century : In this century, In the eighteenth century, In the eighteenth century
  • Age : In the Victorian age, In the Elizabethan age

6. 'In' is used before the word 'A/An + car/taxi/jeep' in a sentence.

Examples :

  • I go to college in a car.                   (right)
  • I go to college by a car.                  ( wrong)
  • My father went to office in a jeep. (right)
  • My father went to office by a jeep. ( wrong)
  • She went to school in a taxi.           (right)
  • She went to school by a taxi.          (wrong)


Use of 'Into'

As we have discussed above that 'Into' gives the sense of movement of any object from outside to inside of any object so let's discuss further below.

1. 'Into' is used to show the motion of any object towards inside.

Examples :

  • The from jumped into the river.
  • He jumped into the well.
  • The thief broke into my house.

2. 'Into' is used also to convert from one medium to another medium or from one state to another state in a sentence.

Examples :

  • Translate this sentence into English.
  • Milk turned into curd.
  • Water turns into ice when temperature is 0 degree centigrade.

3. Some other uses of 'Into' in a sentence.

Examples :

  • The police enquired into the case.
  • That old man has insight into man's character.

4. 'Into' is also used after a verb to change the sense of the verb.

  • Break into : Enter forcefully inside anything
  • Eat into : To destroy
  • Look into : To probe
  • Turn into : To translate or change
  • Do into : To translate or change
  • Let into : To permit
  • See into : To think
