'USED TO' AND 'NEED'
Hello friends, you are welcomed in my website 'Unique Preparation'. In this post I will give you information about 'used to' and 'need'. 'Used to' and 'need' both are marginal auxiliary verb. If you don't know about marginal auxiliary verb, you can read my previous post that I have published before. The name of that post is 'what is auxiliary verb?', you may read this post by clicking (here). Without any delay let's start more about 'used to' and 'need'.
Used To (अà¤्यस्त)
'Used to' is a marginal auxiliary verb which expresses 'past habit/situation, discontinued habit, be accustomed to etc. It's hindi meaning is 'अà¤्यस्त'
Examples :
- He used to come here.
- She used to rebuke him; now she does not rebuke.
- He used to work in the forest area.
- I did not use to walk in the morning. (Negative)
- Did they use to beat him ? (Interrogative)
All the sentences given above consist 'used to' but in the negative and interrogative sentence 'used to' is written as 'use to' because both the sentences are under Simple Past Tense. According to the rule of simple past tense 'use to' is used.
Past habit/situation
'used to' is used to express the sense of 'past habit or situation' in a sentence.
Examples :
- The Chief Minister used to visit here at the time of election.
- Mahatma Gandhi used to fight against British rule for the freedom of India.
- She used to go to school with me before marriage.
- People used to think that I failed in the examination.
The above given sentences consist the meaning of 'past habit'. That means, the doer had the habit of doing a particular work in past time but not now.
Note 1 : 'used to' and 'would' both are used to express the sense of 'past habit/situation'. You may use any one of the words in place of each other.
Examples :
- The Chief Minister would visit here at the time of election.
- Mahatma Gandhi used to fight against British rule for the freedom of India.
Note 2 : Neither 'use to' nor 'used to' is used to express the sense of Present habit. It is used in present tense to make a sentence of Simple Present Tense.
Examples :
- He uses to come here. (wrong)
- He comes here. (right)
- We use to play in the field. (wrong)
- We play in the field. (right)
Discontinued habit
'Used to' is used to express the sense of discontinued habit in a sentence. Would is not suitable to use in this types of sentence.
Examples :
- He used to go to school one day in childhood; now he goes to college.
- He used to beg on the road; now he is a rich man.
- They used to teach in a school; now he is an officer.
- I used to go on foot for a long distance; now I have a car.
In all the above given sentences 'used to' express the habit or situation of a person of past time but later that has been changed.
Be Accustomed To
'Used to' is also used to express the sense of 'be accustomed to' in a sentence. In this types of sentence 'used' is as an adjective and must use 'be, become or get' before it that can be used in any of the tense. In this types of sentence 'noun/pronoun/gerund' is necessary to use after 'used to'.
Examples :
Examples :
- He is used to working at night.
- I am not used to taking tea without sugar.
- They are not used to walking in the morning.
- I am not used to walking a long distance.

Use of Need (जरुरत)
Need is a marginal auxiliary verb which is used in a sentence to express the sense of 'required / to have to be necessary'.
Required / To Have To Be Necessary
Need is used in both singular and plural form in a sentence as a main verb to express the sense of required / to have to be necessary.
Examples :
- He needs his help.
- They need to work hard.
- I need your book.
- You need my money.
In all the given above sentences needs is in singular form and need in plural form according to used subjects before them.
Note : Need is also used as main verb in the sentence of of Past tense and Past participle tense.
Examples :
- I needed his book to complete my home work.
- She needed to complaint against crime.
Need is not used in Continuous tense.
Examples :
- He is needing some money. (wrong)
- He needs some money. (right)
Need In 'Negative And Interrogative Sentence'
When need is used in negative sentence the same rule is applied with it as other main verb.
Examples :
- He need my book. (Assertive)
- He does not need my book. (Negative
- Does he need my book ? (Interrogative)
- They need to do their home work. (Assertive)
- They do not need to do their home work. (Negative)
- Do they need to do their home work. (Interrogative)
Note : When need is used as a main verb in any sentence then infinitive with 'to' (to + verb) is used after this according to necessary.
Examples :
- I need to help my friend. (right)
- I need help my friend. (wrong)
- He needs to go to school. (right)
- He needs go to school. (wrong)
- They needed to come home. (right)
- They needed come home. (wrong)
Need not / Needn't
Need not / Needn't is a marginal auxiliary verb and is always used to express negative sense in the sentence. It is always used in plural form to express negative sense.
Examples :
- I need not work hard.
- He need not come to me.
- You needn't do this work.
- They needn't come with me.
Note : After 'need not or needn't' infinitive with 'to' is not used.
