AUXILIARY VERB
INTRODUCTION ABOUT VERB
Before discussing further
about Auxiliary Verb let’s just throw light on verb, because verb is the
most essential parts of any sentences. Every sentences need an action word
that is fulfilled by a word that is called verb. Some verb change their form
according to the subject, and some don’t .
Ex :
·
Teachers teach us English.
·
Teacher teaches us English.
In the above given two sentences there is same
two verbs teach and teaches. They have changed their forms according to the used
subject teachers and teacher respectively.
AUXILIARY VERB
In many other sentences
except these types, we see that there is also an additional verb which complies
with these types of verbs used in sentences.
Ex :
·
He is going to school.
·
You are playing football
·
My brother can solve this question.
·
You should obey elders.
In these above given
sentences ‘is, are, can and should’
are the verb that don’t change their own form. These types of verbs are called Auxiliary
Verb.
There are mainly 23
helping verbs that we use frequently. All the verbs are listed below.
Used in present tense
: Is, am, are, do, does, have, has, may, must,
should, must and can
Used in past tense
: was, were, had, did, could, would, might
Used in future tense
: shall,
will, be
CLASSIFICATION OF AUXILIARY VERB
In English verbs are
classified into two major classes
1. Lexical Verb
2. Auxiliary
Verb
1.
Lexical Verb : This is also called Ordinary
Verb. It is independent in sentence and is used as main verb of a
sentence. This type of verb changes it’s forms as V1, V2, V3, V4 and V5.
Ex :
·
He plays football in the field.
·
My father has gone to office.
·
My friend is going to Delhi.
·
They frequently go to market at night.
In the given above four
sentences ‘play, gone, going and go’ are Lexical
Verbs or Ordinary Verbs.
2.
Auxiliary Verb : The verb which helps main
verb to create mood, voice, tense and required
expressions in a sentence, is called Auxiliary Verb.
Ex
:- can, may, must, have etc.
·
You are wasting your time with him.
·
Why can you not play with me.
·
Everyone should obey elders.
·
I have already completed my homework.
In the above given four
sentences ‘are, can, shold and have’ are Auxiliary
Verb of main verb ‘wasting, play, obey and completed’ respectively.
These Auxiliary Verbs create mood, tense, voice or required
expressions
.
AUXILIARY VERB USED SOME TIMES AS MAIN VERB
Some Auxiliaries verbs are used also as main
verb. Like am, is, are, have, has etc. Some
more auxiliaries verbs as be, do, have and need are
such Auxiliaries Verbs that are also used as Lexical verb in
sentences. Let’s observe the sentences given below.
Ex :

They are my best friends.
·
David is not a descent person.
·
My friend is a kind person.
·
My school has only ten rooms.
In the above given four
sentences are, is, is and has are Auxiliary
Verbs to see but their function or are used as Main Verbs of the
given sentences.
AUXILIARY VERB USED AS LEXICAL VERB
Now let’s throw light on be,
do, have, need and dare used as Lexical Verb.
Ex :
·
The peon is doing his work.
·
I have no money.
·
I needed your help that time.
·
only few people dare to face difficulties.
In the given four
sentences doing, have , need, dare and be
are used as Lexical Verb. Because they can change their forms according
to the given subjects.
TYPES OF AUXILIARY VERB
According to uses
and structure Auxiliary Verb is categorizes into two category.
1. Primary Auxiliary Verb
2.
Modal
Auxiliary Verb
1.
Primary Auxiliary Verb :

To be : is,
are, am, was were, been, being
·
To have : have, has, had, having
·
To do :
do,
does, did
2. Modal
Auxiliary Verb :
Can, may, shall, will, could,
might, should, would, must, ought to,
used to, need and dare are called Modal Auxiliary Verb.
Note
: Modal Auxiliary Verb are used always as Helping Verb not as Main
Verb
Marginal
Modal Auxiliary Verb :
Need,
dare and used to is called as Marginal Modal Auxiliary Verb
or Semi Modal Auxiliary Verb. These
three verbs are different from its group. As we know that Modal Auxiliary Verb
is not used as Main Verb but these three verbs ‘need, dare and used to’ is used
also as Main Verb.
Ex :

I don’t dare to to go out at night.
·
My father needs my help to complete the project.
